Oaktree Capital Management first met shipping in the person of Peter C Georgiopoulos in 1998.
Oaktree was a three-year-old financial firm just finding its footing in Los Angeles. Georgiopoulos was a 37-year-old fledgling shipowner, looking to step up in scale from the Norwegian KS (limited partnership) deals that marked his beginnings. It was some way to go before he became the iconic 'Peter G'.
