The fifth-largest of Greece’s thousands of islands, Chios lies just 7km from the coast of Turkey in the eastern Aegean Sea.
It is the birthplace of an astonishing number of shipping dynasties for such a small area.
Many explanations have been offered, including the fact that in medieval times the island’s location made it an important part of the trade route to Constantinople.
