X may mark the spot on a treasure map — but whose X is it? That’s the billion-dollar question surrounding the search for the “holy grail of shipwreck treasures”, the San Jose.

Two contenders have been battling for decades over wreck co-ordinates and finder’s rights to the Spanish galleon. Its manifest is said to list 116 chests of emeralds and jewels, 344 tons of gold and silver coins mined in Peru and two tons of platinum, worth $17bn by some estimates.
