The past two decades have seen the rise of a new generation of progressive open registers as the leading flags of choice in mainstream shipping, to the extent that they now account for more than 60% of the world fleet.
In gross tonnage terms, three-quarters of the fleet is now consolidated in the top 10 ship registers, and the largest seven are all open registers, according to broker Clarksons.
