Crew on the 36,000-dwt Nord Quebec (built 2013) could breathe a sigh of relief however as the inquisitive polar bear didn’t attempt to try out its sea legs.

“Fortunately, the guest did not embark the vessel. Polar bears are dangerous animals at this point where they are extremely hungry – and they are not particular about their food,” a spokesperson for Norden said.

”Luckily, the polar bear was ready to leave the quay berth again when ‘asked’ to do so by the polar bear patrol in Churchill, where they are used to handle polar bears coming close to houses, ships and human beings.”

The ship was loading at Churchill, one of the few places where polar bears can be observed in the wild.
