Sacked Sydney Ferries chief Geoffrey Smith has claimed he did not realise that company credit cards were not to be used for personal transactions.

The former chief executive lost his job earlier this month when it was revealed he ran up big bills on his company plastic, despite his signature appearing on several documents outlining the shipowner’s policy on such matters.

Now he has told an Australian corruption inquiry that a crippling mortgage and his wife's medical bills prevented him from paying off the debt.
