Russia has today jailed a gang of men for their roles in the mysterious disappearance of the cargo ship, Arctic Sea.

Sentences of up to 12 years have been handed down to the sextet and one will serve seven years hard labour, the BBC reports.

All were convicted of hijacking the 4,700-dwt Arctic Sea, which disappeared off the map amid accusations of arms trafficking in 2009.

It vanished at the start of August 2009 having been mysteriously raided in the Baltic a few days earlier.

After a huge search, and numerous conspiracy theories, the vessel was discovered off the Cape Verde Islands three weeks later.

All nine men accused of taking the Solchart Management-controlled vessel have now been convicted.

According to Russian prosecutors the plot, which later became the subject of a WikiLeaks cable, was masterminded from the Estonian capital, Tallinn.
