Business the Maersk way

Just 18 months off his centenary Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller has hit the silver screen in a rather expensive corporate film celebrating the way the biggest of the liner shipping groups does business.

Mc-Kinney Moller is old enough to recall the era of silent films but still sharp enough to remind the youngsters running the business today of the principles that the AP Moller -Maersk group was built on.

Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller
Times sure change in the world of shipping with Maersk expecting delivery of the first of its new 18,000-teu leviathans in time for Mc-Kinney Moller hundredth birthday.

But one thing remains constant the Maersk way of doing business.

“The basic principle is that people can trust us. The authorities can trust us, employees can trust us and business connections can trust us. Your word should be your bond. We exercise constant care. By constant care I mean care at the time the action is taken,” declares Mc-Kinney Moller.

“It is much easier doing it right the first time instead of having to correct or add later on. That’s difficult but of course if your care delays decision it can be too much,” he concedes.

“Constant care is the proverb that my papa left to me and the group,” he adds.

And it seems he has not resigned himself to living the remainder of his life on dry land.

“I’ll see you on board,” he signs off.

AP Moller – Maersk has spent a reputed DKK 12m ($2.15m) on the 12 minute video “We are Maersk” but the company sees it as an investment well spent.

The Copenhagen based shipowner worked in the business founded by his father all his life and was chairman from 1965 through to 2003.
