Australia hunts mystery spill ship

List of vessels compiled after blobs of oil found along 40km of Queensland beach.

Australian authorities in Queensland are trying to find out if a merchant vessel spilled oil found on Fraser Island.

The website said small blobs of oil have been seen along a 40km stretch of beach.

Maritime Safety Queensland general manager Patrick Quirk said: "We have activated an incident control centre at Gladstone to ensure we have all the resources we need.”

A list of ships known to have been in the area recently is being compiled.

Maximum fines for a spill can be up to AUD 17m ($13.04m) under commonwealth law.
