Australian authorities in Queensland are trying to find out if a merchant vessel spilled oil found on Fraser Island.
The News.com website said small blobs of oil have been seen along a 40km stretch of beach.
Maritime Safety Queensland general manager Patrick Quirk said: "We have activated an incident control centre at Gladstone to ensure we have all the resources we need.”
