Two Greek shipping companies have been fined a total of $2.7m for their part in a ‘magic pipe’ pollution case.

Oceanfleet Shipping, the vessel’s operator, was sentenced to pay a $1.35m fine, while Oceanic Illsabe, the ship’s corporate owner gets a fine of $675,000.

The two companies have also been ordered to pay an additional $450,000 and $225,000 respectively Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary in recognition of the threat posed by illegal discharges of oily waste to the marine environment.
