The International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) becomes a reality for the shipping industry on 8 September.

But there is still more that needs to be done, according to debates that took place on the first day of the 8th International Conference on Ballast Water Management Convention 2017 currently being held in Singapore.

IMO secretary-general emeritus Koji Sekimizu, the man who is widely regarded as the driving force behind the BWMC, said in his keynote address that efforts still needed to be made to get more states to ratify the convention so that the industry does not face conflicting rules and regulations.
