Japanese accident investigators are examining the unscheduled movements of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK)-operated 2,858-teu ACX Crystal (built 2008) to understand how it collided with the US Navy frigate USS Fitzgerald on Friday last week.

The containership was heading east to the port of Tokyo from Nagoya but, according to automated identification system (AIS) tracking data, its movements changed to a westerly heading just before the 2.20am
