The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) laid out guidelines on how vessels can better monitor weather conditions. The recommendations come as increasing scrutiny is being placed on the role of out-of-date weather forecasts in the sinking of the 5,330-lane-metre El Faro (built 1975).

The NTSB said its goal for the recommendations, which include better weather forecasting and more frequent advisories and alerts, is aimed at making sure seafarers have the most up-to-date forecasts for hurricanes and tropical cyclones.
