Six saved in grounding

Six seafarers have been rescued from a Turkish cargoship that ran aground in a storm off Portugal.

Merle aground

The 2,400-dwt Merle (built 1991) lodged on a beach near Aveiro on Saturday and had suffered water ingress in the engine room in severe weather.

The port was closed at the time for safety reasons.

The five Turkish men, plus one Azeri, were brought ashore by port authority vessels.

One was kept in hospital for observation after complaining of chest pains.
