With around 364,000 Filipino seafarers crewing the global shipping fleet, they make up 28% of the total number.
The Sailors’ Society, which last week held its charity ball in Singapore, has launched an emergency relief appeal.
“A huge percentage of the world's seafarers are from the Philippines. Now more than ever we need the industry’s help,” the charity said.
“Many have family and loved ones affected by the disaster, and in many case the seafarers are thousands of miles away desperate to know that their families are safe.
