Search and rescue coordinators headquartered in Miami have launched a firefighting effort to respond to the the blaze on the 220-metre barge, which was 138 kilometres off Nassau.
The Coast Guard received a call from the 538-gt tug Patriarch (built 1976), which has the barge in tow, to report that a fire had ignited in the boxes it is carrying.
“There is no threat to the general population or the seven crewmembers aboard the Patriarch at this time,” the Coast Guard said.
