The mishap happened at an Eagle Harbor plant as the 3,200-gt Walla Walla (built 1973) was undergoing annual maintenance, local media said.
Workers had drilled a hole in the bilge deck to drain dirty water and paint chips, but a second hole two inches across pierced the hull.
A temporary repair was made with a clamp and pressure patch, but a permanent repair will be needed.
