Cork district court heard that Turkey's Mehmet Kaya lost "effective control" of the 12,100-dwt Begonia G (built 2007) and was fined EUR 1,250 ($1,700), the Irish Examiner reported.
Kaya was charged with breaching a vessel traffic directive off the Cork coast on 27 February, 2013.
The ship was heading from Foynes to Cork with fertiliser when it developed engine problems.
The vessel, operated by Armador of Turkey, began to drift northwards towards the coast but the captain failed to notify the coast guard of the situation.
