The clash happened on Friday off the port of Waigaoqiao, the Shanghai Daily reported.
The Xin Wang 88, carrying containers, went down after the incident involving Wu Xiang 66.
Four other seafarers were rescued.
The accident delayed several vessels, including a Royal Caribbean cruiseship that had to drop anchor outside the port.
