The US Coast Guard (USCG) said Costamare's 3,840–teu MSC Kyoto (built 1981) got stuck between buoys 36 and 38, reportedly as a result of steering failure.
Ships with a draft of more than 30 feet were stopped from passing. All other traffic was transiting on a one-at-a-time basis.
The vessel was stuck for 12 hours, before pulling free and moving to a berth at Alabama State Docks.
