Around a third of the passengers on board the 6,586-gt Sewol (built 1994) have been rescued while four are now confirmed dead, according to the latest reports.
Korean officials say the vessel was carrying 459 passengers, including 325 students and 15 teachers, roughly half its capacity of just over 900.
Earlier reports had placed the number of passengers on board at 476.
