Politician Winston Peters, leader of New Zealand First, claimed the 12,700-gt Interislander vessel Arahura (built 1983) was involved in a near-miss with another passenger vessel at Picton, an incident confirmed by transport minister Gerry Brownlee, TVNZ reported.
KiwiRail said it did not cover up the incident and has launched an investigation. It will report to Maritime New Zealand.
Peters also claimed another near-collision took place involving Arahura as it left Wellington.
