KiwiRail’sInterislander line said the standing down of the two masters would not have amajor impact on timetables, however, APNZ reported.

The news comes afterallegations by New Zealand First leader Winston Peters that the company hadcovered up near-misses, something KiwiRail denied.

Thetwo vessels involved are the 22,400-gtKaitaki (built 1994) and the12,700-gt Arahura(built 1983).

"While we mayneed to move masters between ships, this is a quiet time of year and thereshould be minimal impact on freight and passengers," the company said.
