Local reports said the incident involving the 596-passenger Stena Nautica (built 1986) occurred in the early hours of Tuesday as it was leaving Grenaa.
It was holed in the engine compartment, but passengers were not in danger.
Oil booms were laid out as a precaution and divers checked the hull.
Work began later in the morning to weld the 5m by 20cm crack.
