Authorities said the operation to float the Costa Cruises vessel from an underwater platform had been carried out successfully on Monday morning, the Guardian reported.

The cruiseship capsized after hitting rocks off Giglio in January 2012, killing 32 people.

The refloat was managed by pumping air into 30 sponsons attached to the vessel, raising it two metres off the platform.

The hugely complex salvage operation saw the vessel righted in September.
