Iino Kaiun’s 82,000-dwt Amakusa Island (built 2005) got stuck off the port of Prince Rupert on Monday night, local reports said.
Port authority spokesman Michael Gurney told the Northern View website that the ship is loaded with 80,000 tonnes of coal and had suffered damage to its hull.
"We're not sure how much water was taken on, but the damage to the hull caused two buoyancy compartments to be compromised so the water-tight bulkheads closed to prevent water from entering the rest of the ship," he added.
