Fednav bulker refloated

A Fednav handysize bulker that had been aground near the US city of Detroit since Sunday has been refloated.

The 36,563-dwt Federal Rideau (built 2000) was stuck in the downbound shipping channel of Lake St Clair near the Detroit River.

The US Coast Guard (USCG) said the Hong Kong-flagged bulker was now safely anchored in the Detroit River at the Belle Island Anchorage.

“Divers are scheduled to conduct a damage assessment survey of the vessel, and repairs will be made if necessary,” the USCG said.

An earlier attempt to refloat the freighter on Sunday by two tugs was unsuccessful after one

The USCG had earlier said that the cause of the grounding was due to a loss of steering caused by a motor coupling.

The vessel, which was carrying 22,672t of wheat when the incident happened, was en route to Montreal in Canada.
