The 52-year-old died after becoming overcome on a ladder and falling into the hold of the 43,000–dwt Stara Planina (built 2007) off Saint-Nazaire on 2 August, Ouest France reported.
Rescuers could not revive him after his heart stopped.
A post-mortem confirmed carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death.
