Second fire hits Avance VLGCs

Avance Gas has seen a second VLGC newbuilding hit by a fire while under construction at Jiangnan shipyard in China.

Oslo-listed Avance says the blaze occurred in cargo tank number three of hull 1074.

In a short statement, the shipowner said no casualties occurred during the incident that is now being investigated.

It is not clear if delivery of the newbuilding will be delayed.

Earlier this year the first of Avance’s VLGCs at Jiangnan, hull 1071, was also hit by a fire.

That blaze was reported to have been started by polyurethane insulation materials that were used for the ship.

Christian Andersen, president of Avance Gas, says the early indications are that this latest fire is far less severe than the previous one, based on pictures that he has seen.

He is awaiting a report from the site team before making any assessment on if the new incident will hold up the arrival of the ship.

Avance will purchase eight VLGC newbuildings under construction at Jiangnan from Frontline 2012 upon delivery.

Newbuilding supervision is being overseen by the John Fredriksen-led company, which is a major Avance shareholder.

Andersen says Avance will only take the newbuildings if it is satisfied with the vessels.

However, he remains confident in Frontline 2012 and class to work with the yard and ensure the ships are up to standard.

The previous fire has delayed hull 1071 by around one month. It is now likely to arrive in November this year.
