The Chilean navy sent ships and a helicopter to mount a rescue operation after the 5,700-dwt ro-ro Amadeo I (built 1976) ran aground on Monday off Paso Kirke.
A total of 17 passengers and 28 crew were taken off the Navimag vessel, local reports said.
Attempts to avoid major flooding in the cargo and machinery spaces failed and the vessel was listing at sixty degrees in the water.
