The flagless 442-dwt Amin Darya (built 1987, also known as Al Noor) and 370kg of the drug were scuttled off Mombasa on Monday, witnessed by president Uhuru Kenyatta.

The blast was carried out despite a court order to halt the destruction, according to the Standard daily.

The ship was seized in July. A Kenyan court had wanted the scuttling delayed so that any owner could claim it.

Nine foreigners and three Kenyans are to face trial in connection with the haul.

The find was notable for unveiling a new drug-smuggling scam: the mixing of heroin with diesel in fuel tanks, for later distillation.
