Boxship rescues refugees

Hundreds of refugees were rescued by a Maersk boxship when their fishing boat took on water near Crete.

The 15,550-teu Evelyn Maersk (built 2007) was contacted by authorities on Saturday night and asked to assist the 352 migrants in danger.

The operation to bring the people on board took place during the night.

Among the refugees, who came from Syria and other African countries, there were 43 children.

They were all disembarked in Sicily.

Evelyn Maersk was en route from Suez to Algeciras in Spain.
