Local authorities conducted an intensive search of the area with over 20 vessels but it did not bear fruit.
A spokesman from Humber Coastguard said the search has been terminated for now but it is likely that Cleethorpes Coastguard will continue looking for the missing man.
Local media have reported that the cargo vessel from which the man went overboard is the 648-teu Freya (built 2000).
