The 62,000–dwt American Spirit (built 1978) got stuck on mud and sand on Thursday evening, the US Coast Guard (USCG) said.

No injuries or pollution were reported.

It was heading to Gary in Indiana with 64,800 tons of iron ore.

The crew reported being pushed against the south side of the channel by strong winds.

The USCG worked through the night to develop a salvage plan.
