The US Coast Guard (USCG) has urged shipowners to save themselves greater pain by admitting to the use of non-compliant ship fuels.
Speaking at the Global Maritime Environment Congress at SMM in Hamburg, USCG commander Ryan Allain said: "It's better to tell us first, than have us discover it later."
The environmental standards division chief told delegates that the US was seeking a level playing field for all operators.
