Dark smoke began billowing from the 3,000-dwt Lizanne (built 1978) on Wednesday afternoon, local reports said.
Fire crew began a room by room search of the front of the ship, but were forced to back out because of rising temperatures in certain areas that caused their boots to melt.
The captain helped lead the firefighters through the vessel.
Flames were contained by the evening, but a watch continued to be kept on the ship.
