The fire broke out around 18.40 in the 800 block of South Fries Avenue beneath a steel warehouse, threatening nearby ships.
It was contained to a 50-foot-by-800-foot area, but efforts to extinguish the fire were hampered as crews struggled to reach flames within multiple layers of heavy timber soaked in creosote.
Through a mutual aid agreement, Long Beach Fire Department fireboats have been assisting the Port of Los Angeles with fire suppression.
