The rescue operation was carried out on the 82,000-dwt BW Prince (built 2007) 12 miles from the Mouille Point lighthouse on Tuesday.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) commander Pat van Eyssen said it was alerted by port authority Transnet that a 39-year-old Filipino crewman had suffered burns to his leg.
He added that a paramedic and an NSRI crewman were transferred aboard the ship and the patient, “found to be in a serious but stable condition”, lifted on to a sea rescue craft.
