The accident involving the 6,050–dwt Christina (built 2009) happened on 9 January at Audorf-Rade, Brunsbuttel marine police said in a statement.
According to witnesses, the 38 year-old Eastern European second officer appeared for duty on the bridge and flipped the switch to automatic for no reason.
The vessel ran out of control and sunk one dolphin.
