Thirty-nine people died after the 274-gt Sea Smooth (built 2003) and the hydrofoil 150-gt Lamma IV (built 1996) collided on 1 October 2012, China’s National Day, in waters off Lamma Island.

Lai Sai-ming, who captained the Sea Smooth, was convicted on all 39 counts of manslaughter. He was also found guilty of endangering the safety of others at sea.

Chow Chi-wai, captain of the Lamma IV, was acquitted of manslaughter, but also found guilty of endangering the safety of others.
