The Latvian army said one of its patrol boats provided assistance to the man on the 7,100-dwt Baltic Eagle (built 2004) on Friday morning.
Liva Veita, a spokeswoman for the coastguard, told the BNS news agency that the seaman had lost part of his ring finger.
The ship is operated by KD Bunker of Kaliningrad.
