Joao Aguiar Machado, director general DG Mobility and Transport, European Commission, today identified the issue as one of a range that demanded global agreement at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
"The IMO, however, should not be the playground for national interests, but for member states to push for the highest standards," Machado said.
"No wants to pay less for safety," he added.
