The barge found itself in the middle of an unexpected storm in the Beaufort Sea on 21 October, when it broke free from a tug.
A GPS machine was dropped onto the Northern Transportation Company Ltd (NTCL)–owned barge.
It still carries 925 gallons of diesel fuel in its tanks.
The barge was not able to be recovered before winter arrived.
Alaska Dispatch News reports that the company could be able to recover its barge during summer.
