The 4,360-teu Sea Land Meteor (built 1996) was pushed to the shore by strong winds as it was trying to manoeuvre near the coast of Vlissingen on Tuesday.
Dutch media reported that congestion at the scene was another factor in the incident.
The vessel dropped anchor in its effort to stabilise but without success.
Local authorities said the cargo carried on the Sea Land Meteor was safe and that no pollution was detected.
