These “admiralty” incidents tend to result in the most expensive insurance claims for insurers.
The club said that during its 2013/14 policy year, it experienced its two largest claims ever, both arising from this kind of accident: the grounding of the bulker Smart off South Africa and the tanker Wu Yi San hitting a terminal in Korea.
Potential liabilities are estimated to be over $100m, it said.
