Park Guen-hye said at a speech from a port in Jindo: “I will take the necessary steps to salvage the ship at the earliest possible date.”
The government estimates that raising the ship will cost $110m.
But the president’s reassurances were met with anger from relatives of the victims, who cancelled at least one memorial service in protest.
They called Park’s announcement vague and politically motivated.
