Worsening weather conditions have forced Russian authorities to stop pumping oil from a grounded tanker off Sakhalin Island.

The 1,100-dwt Nadezhda (built 1986) spilled fuel after damaging one of its tanks in the incident on Saturday at Nevelsk.

Lightering was halted on Monday, with wind speeds of up to 18 metres per second and waves of up to 4 metres recorded.

The vessel hit a reef while carrying 786 tons of fuel oil and diesel, but the amount of the spill has not yet become clear.
