The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said another mission will be needed to recover the voyage data recorder (VDR) from the wreckage of El Faro.
The announcement came a day after the agency announced that the missing device, which is hoped to contain key evidence for an investigation into the TOTE Maritime ro-ro's October sinking, had been found by a joint mission on the US Navy research vessel Atlantis.
The NTSB said that given the device's proximity to the mast and other obstructions, current equipment on the Atlantis will not be able pull it to the surphace.
