Former Costa Concordia captain Francesco Schettino has begun his appeal against a manslaughter conviction.
The master was sentenced to 16 years in jail in 2015 for his part in the 2012 capsizing which killed 32 people.
He was also convicted of causing a maritime accident and abandoning ship.
Schettino will seek to overturn the verdict at a hearing in Florence.
The prosecution, however, wants a longer prison term of 26 years, the BBC reported.
The
