Fears of pollution are growing on Australia’s Christmas Island after a wrecked Taiwanese cargoship broke up further.

The 4,100–dwt Tycoon (built 1983) is now lying in three pieces at the island’s port after breaking moorings, smashing into the cliff face and sinking three weeks ago.



Residents of the island say the oil spill from the vessel is getting worse.



John Richardson, commander of Christmas Island Volunteer Marine Rescue, said about one third of the beach at Flying Fish Cove has been polluted by the wreck.



"It's
